Monthly Hotel Stays in Houston: Picking an Area Before You Book
Published Oct 19, 2026
In Houston, picking the area matters more than picking the hotel. The city is spread out, traffic defines every day, and the difference between a good monthly stay and a bad one is usually the commute you signed up for. Our Houston hotel list has 321 hotels that can fit a 30-night stay, with listed 30-night rates from about $55 to $197 a night and a middle value near $97. Method: listed nightly rates for a 30-night stay (November 2 to December 2, 2026), collected in October 2026 from public booking pages for the 255 hotels that publish one; listed rates, not hotel-confirmed quotes.
Houston is several cities in one
Houston has no single center for monthly stays. Energy workers head west, medical workers head south of downtown, aerospace people head to Clear Lake, and everyone argues about the Galleria. The metro is about 50 miles across, and a hotel that looks close on a map can be an hour away at 7:30 AM. Start with where you will spend your weekdays, then look for the hotel.
The areas at a glance
| Area | Fits | Hotels in our list (Oct 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Energy Corridor / Westchase | Energy company offices along I-10 and Beltway 8 | 46 |
| Galleria / Uptown | Central west side, retail, offices, restaurants | 27 |
| Medical Center / NRG | Texas Medical Center workers and patients' families | 6 |
| Hobby / Clear Lake / NASA | Aerospace, port, southeast side | 15 |
| The Woodlands / Conroe / Spring | North side, ExxonMobil campus area, families | 23 |
| Katy / Stafford | Far west and southwest suburbs | 27 |
Energy Corridor and Westchase: for energy jobs
The largest cluster in our Houston list, 46 hotels, sits along I-10 west and the Westchase district near Beltway 8. This is where the energy companies put their offices, and where their contractors, consultants and relocating hires put their monthly stays. Extended Stay America Suites Houston I10 West CityCentre and Candlewood Suites Houston Westchase/Westheimer are examples from our list. Living here when your office is here means you skip the worst drive in the city: the inbound I-10 and Katy Freeway morning traffic.
Galleria and Uptown: central and busy
The Galleria area works when you want to be central without being downtown: offices, restaurants and retail in walking distance, and 27 hotels in our list, including Extended Stay America Suites Houston Galleria Uptown and Home2 Suites by Hilton at the Galleria. The trade is traffic on Westheimer and Loop 610 and, often, paid parking. It fits people who value evenings out of the room over a quiet parking lot.
Medical Center and Clear Lake: two special cases
The Texas Medical Center draws traveling nurses, visiting physicians and families of patients on long treatments, and it is its own ecosystem south of downtown. Only 6 hotels in our list sit in the Medical Center/NRG area itself, so book early if that is your anchor. Clear Lake, 25 miles southeast, serves NASA's Johnson Space Center and the aerospace contractors around it, with 15 hotels in our list including Extended Stay America Suites Houston NASA Johnson Space Center and Homewood Suites by Hilton Houston Clear Lake NASA. These two areas barely overlap with the rest of the city; choose them only if your days are there.
The Woodlands and the north side
The Woodlands, about 30 miles north of downtown on I-45, is a planned community with its own office campuses, and it fits families and people working on the north side who want green streets and good schools nearby. Our list has 23 hotels across The Woodlands, Conroe and Spring, including Candlewood Suites Houston (The Woodlands). The honest warning: the I-45 commute into central Houston is one of the roughest in the metro, so do not book The Woodlands for a downtown job.
Weather, storms and seasons
Houston is humid and hot from May through September, with afternoons over 90°F and thick air. Hurricane season runs June through November, and heavy rain can flood underpasses and low roads any month of the year. For a monthly stay, this means practical questions: ask the hotel whether the property has flooded before, what the plan is during a storm, and whether your rate is refundable if a hurricane watch forces a change. Locals check the forecast app before they check traffic, and after one week you will too.
Prices and taxes on a monthly stay
Listed 30-night rates in the Houston area ran from about $55 to $197 a night, with a middle value near $97 across the 255 hotels that publish a 30-night rate. The lowest area medians in our list are on the east side, in Stafford and around Humble (near $78-$82 a night); the highest are in Shenandoah, Katy and the Heights/Galleria corridor ($110-$122). These are listed rates for November 2 to December 2, 2026, not hotel-confirmed quotes, and hotels confirm the final price. Ask for the full monthly total in writing.
On taxes: Texas charges a 6 percent state hotel tax, and guests who stay 30 or more consecutive days are exempt from it, per the Texas Comptroller's FAQ checked on October 18, 2026. The Comptroller's own example shows Houston's full stack: 6 percent state, 7 percent city, 2 percent Harris County and 2 percent Harris County - Houston Sports Authority. This is general information, not tax advice.
What we found
Our Houston list shows how suburban this market is: the five biggest clusters are all outside the downtown loop, led by the Energy Corridor with 46 hotels. The bottom of the listed range is about $55 a night in both Houston and Austin, and the middle values sit close too, near $97 in Houston and $95 in Austin. Listed rates from our October 2026 hotel lists, not hotel-confirmed quotes.
